Can u tell me what is the exact street in industrial valley in marikina is in danger so that we can talk to them personally and give some advice. Thank you. I really appreciate your response.

tulisanes says:

i included the old and new trace faults in alternating presentation. as the 2015 version is color-coded, please note that red lines mean trace is certain; orange lines mean trace is approximate; and purple means trace of fissure. however, for the lines in the industrial valley area, it seems the common trace is approximate.

Hi! I was led to your blog as I was looking up fault lines.. I checked your maps and I can’t find our area in Laguna. I can’t toggle/move the map either.. Is it safe to say that we are “considerably” far from the fault line? Our place is located in Elvinda Village 3 blocks from National Road (4th St./Amarillo St.). I’m just quite worried because the ground below us seems to be receding and the walls have small cracks on them that wasn’t there around 2-3years ago.. I thought the soil recession was due to the floodings but I still am worried. May I have your opinion about this? Thanks!

* * *

tulisanes says:

if i pinned your village correctly, it appears to stay clear of those areas on the left and below with the short cracks (in red). but then again, there is a chance of error that the cracks weren’t totally all accounted for, or are maybe new that such new cracks developed since phivolcs mapped out the metro for fault lines several years ago…. i don’t know, but one thing is sure, the general area is riddled with multiple short cracks that new ones appearing and adding to the cluster in sporadic, scattered fashion as to reach your area is not unthinkable. i suggest that you conduct an informal survey of residents and see if they also experience what you’re experiencing with the ground and the walls of the house. if others do, then please contact phivolcs to get an expert assessment of your situation.

Elvinda Village

…i would like to add that if your house is relatively new,  having some hairline cracks on the walls is normal, so says my architect friend. it happens as the weight of structures of the house is pulled down by gravity and settles. same thing with receding ground, specially if the “tambak” process did not have sufficient time to settle optimally. if this seems so, go seek advice from a licensed architect or structural or civil engineer.

Thank you for the very informative site. It must’ve been very tedious to do this research and kudos to your patience and passion.

Double check ko lang po, Sir, South of Market, BGC which lies on 11th Ave. cor. 26th St. Saw it highlighted on your MV Fault System, Philvocs. Is it really on the 26th? SoMa is a 39-floor high rise condo and we’re looking to invest on it as well as live in.

Your response will be highly appreciated, thank you very much.

* * *

tulisanes says:

Yes, it has been very tedious doing the maps. halfway through, it became nerve-wracking. with piecing together the google maps, imagine having to spend at least 4 hours a day, everyday for one month and a half to assemble several kilometers long of the fault line? well, i didn’t have to but nobody was doing it. in time THAT became reason enough  …the corner of 26th and 11th avenues you mentioned is about 0.89 kms. from the nearest section of the west valley fault.

South of Market

Hello. I would like to commend you for coming up with this very informative, if a bit disconcerting website. You have really put in a lot of time and effort to this endeavor and I salute you.

In the maps that you provided, I can’t quite make out where FTI complex is vis-a-vis the fault line. I hope you can help me figure it out as there is a residential development I am looking at there. Thank you and more power!

* * *

tulisanes says:

running from montalban in the north-east, the west valley fault seems to stop or disappear about halfway between the blocks of 8th and 9th streets on maria rodriguez tinga avenue in taguig and to resurface and continue again from the sucat thermal power plant nearly 7 kilometers away. fti complex would be not far away from where the faultline disappeared from the radar, so to speak.

hi! nice informative site you have here. we are planning to buy a lot in dona rosario bayview subdivision in sucat muntinlupa, just want to know if it sits on top of the fault line. thanks in advance for the response!

tulisanes says:

in between one end of the fault in taguig (upper right) and the other end in the sucat thermal plant area (lower left), if you connect the red lines representing the west valley fault, you’re bound to run right smack into dona rosario bayview subdivision. now i don’t know if this seeming method of connecting the dots is scientific, but common sense for me dictates that this should indicate the POTENTIAL for a fault line to be. it does not appear now, but when (not if) the fault moves, the cracks might just get bigger and connect these two ends of the faultline that look as if they just terminated abruptly!

Sir,

Thank you for your effort in spreading awareness and for patiently answering the questions of those who have read your article.

I just want to know if you have any information on the areas where landslides are likely to happen. I live in filinvest two, my kids go to school in don vicente street, and my folks live in penafrancia street in payatas. I am very concerned about the possibility of landslide in our area because of the steep roads and slopes. Please advise if that is a threat, aside from the possible collapse of structures and fire in our area.

Additional information will be highly appreciated.

Thank you.

…while the streets you referred for your kids and parents lie far from the same fault. however, you mentioned your fear of the possibility of landslide. though not a scope of this blog, i believe you will find the ANSWER here, provided the people running the PHILIPPINE GEOPORTAL can get their act together and make the site functional and running and quit hiding behind why theirs’s still a “beta” version (as of 7/17/2014).

Thanks for the alarming information. this would be of great help for the awareness and preparedness of Filipinos. my question is since the fault will traverse from Binan, Laguna to Tagaytay, how far is the fault line from Laguna Technopark Sta, Rosa, Laguna? will it cross the Adventist University of the Philippines?
thanks and God bless.

* * *

tulisanes says:

i can just give my humble opinion. though i’m no geologist, my take on the question “if the fault  will cross the adventist university of the philippines” is possibly. the trace fault in red thin lines show a pattern of direction. given a sufficient amount of stress put on the earth as generated by a strong magnitude earthquake, that same pattern of direction can continue in a hit or close-call miss of the university. i guess there is no way to be sure. but then i can always be wrong, of course, about the fault extending beyond its identified location. so go ask phivolcs instead for better peace of mind.

Nick Limbacosays:

Good day tulisanes. My kids study in Paref Southridge school near Asya Enclaves(along West Service road – SLEX) and Alabang 400(New Alabang Hills Village) in Don Jesus blvd. This school has 2 buildings with about 4 floors each. An officer there claims that the school campus lies on top of a solid adobe rock which gives him confidence that probably the building structure can withstand a 7.2 earthquake magnitude. About 1000 students and personnel dwell in those buildings on school days. I believe this school is close to the faultline. I am afraid of a major isolation in the area as the faultine crosses SLEX and a petroleum pipeline travels along the West service road, a recipe for disaster. I believe though, red Cross Muntinlupa is drawing up plans of potential exit points if isolation happens due to a major earthquake. From your observation, will the school building collapse in an uneventful “Big One” ? What about Intercity Homes, which is practically beside Southridge School, can it handle a 7.2? Maraming salamat !

ron, i can’t say for sure since since no visual representation of the west valley fault (red line and dashes) is found in your immediate vicinity. however, on assessment of a pattern from a macro viewpoint, the path of the west valley fault as shown below appears to cross your general vicinity. it is notable that the fault breaks out in scattered multiple faults just about where they appear and begin in the sucat power plant area. it is best to consult phivolcs to really know for sure.

Hi Tulisanes. I have been trying to check if the condominium project we recently bought sits near the fault line. It was really a relief that I found your site. Can we check with you if the Lumiere Towers of DMCI in Shaw and Pasig Blvd. is near the fault? What your opinion of the location?

* * *

tulisanes says…

Lumiere Residences

you’re safe as long as your condo is built strong with expert help from a structural engineer, and it doesn’t sit right smack on a faultline. of course, your safety under these conditions are feasible only theoretically. for when the dreaded 7.2 magnitude hits, anything can happen, which can go against the expectation of experts. perhaps all these depend on how much faith you put on the structural strength of your condo as designed by some unknown or famous engineer. or if the reputation of the developer rides well with you. but here’s one thing that you can bet can happen at the least —your condo will start swaying. even if it doesn’t buckle, can your beating heart skip a beat and survive the experience? these videos of skyscrapers swaying during an earthquake are enough to make anyone decide a quick answer.

tulisanes says…

your area j.p. rizal near makati municipal hall is about 4.24 km away from the nearest faultline at C-5 bridge. but please, understand that though having the faultline beneath your house is in no uncertain terms deadly, destructive, dangerous, and SUICIDE, to be far away from the fault but your house is structurally a death trap, like fragile matchsticks stacked to look like a house, then you are no better off. just imagine the roof above you collapsing if your house is old and not structurally stable, or if it was constructed without the input and expertise or advise of a civil or structural engineer.

the truth is, everywhere in metro manila the fatal effects of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake will be felt and experienced. each one’s chances of survival will depend a lot on the strength of the house, building, or any structure he or she is in when (not if, as philvolcs always points out) the marikina valley fault line system finally moves.

  • I have checked your map quite a few times but I cannot seem to tell, it being too small for me. I am hoping you could help me with this.

* * *

tulisanes says…

i hope you find your house in the snapshot below. what i noticed is there is no soliven III on the satellite map (must be a typo error somewhere). but i found paraguay st. and also encircled all soliven sts, nearby.

listen, go let the chips fall where they may. it may take time to sink in. but only after acceptance of the situation can one make important meaningful decisions.

take it from phivolcs, who says the west valley fault moving is a question of when not if; who also says that the west valley fault moving NOW is long overdue. the study on the fault in 2004 says 36,000 may die should the fault move; the latest 2013 AusAid Hazard Maps Study upgraded the number to 37,000. it’s a sword of damocles hanging over our heads that can keep us worrying forever. maybe it will move in our lifetime; maybe not. as always, the saying holds true: “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” this may be the most important decision you will ever make –beginning with consulting a structural engineer to determine how strong your house will be against a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

God bless you, and may He keep you and your family safe!

Hi there!

Thank you for sharing these information to us especially the maps. But I can’t seem to find the place where our charity village for the abandoned children is proposed to be build. We are really concerned.

I am using google earth now, and there seems to be that light blue line, that indicates the fault system. I would like to visit Philvocs as well in the very near future regarding our concern.

But for now, if ever you can help me, as this are the coordinates more or less of where the site is, 14.746912, 121.156078 . It is in San Isidro, Montalban, Rizal, around 500 meters northeast from Avilon Zoo.

If the area is high risk, or that there are things that we should be aware of, anything that can enlighten us before we start building.

We have work hard and still working to get the finances and sponsorship for this Charity village and we want our children safe as possible.

I hope you can help me in this research, any information will be appreciate. Thank you so much and have a great day.

Kindest regards.

* * *

tulisanes says…

your coordinates that show the proposed location of charity village is right smack in the middle of the west and east valley trace faults. though it seems from either side of charity village the faultlines are very far away to be worried about –well, if we’re talking about the distance from one faultline only, that is far. but two faultlines that i’d say are relatively near each other MAY have interaction with one another during ground movement.

i don’t mean to scare. if i’m doing it, blame it to my overactive imagination. but i can’t help comparing the image below to a hanging bridge, where i liken the land mass between the two trace faults to the mid-section of a bridge. with ground cracks on one end and another ground cracks on the other end, should there be the predicted 7.2 magnitude quake, these two ends may, for lack of a better word, “snap” and the land mass drops, or slides vertically, or the cracks spread and become numerous in between the two faultlines.

i don’t know. I’M NOT AN EXPERT. the whiz kids from philvolcs should have the answer to questions on the safety factor. i’m just here to help locate the faultlines with regard to the coordinates you gave me. i hope i helped!

good luck and God bless your good heart!

THAT may just be the case as implied by the new study conducted on the marikina valley faultline system, where antipolo gets dragged for the first time as one of the worst hit.

kingsville seems to be in the line of sight from the tip of the east valley fault found at right. i don’t know if it will –not even heard a hint of it spoken– but if the fault grows bigger and rips land and tears houses and building in its direct path, kingsville may just be in the way.

anyway, if you’ve seen the new aus-aid hazard map study, where they say 37,000 people may die during a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, much of the number seems to come from the marikina and antipolo area, or a big swath of land that AUTHORITIES HAVEN’T EVEN TOLD –CORRECTION, EMPHASIZED TO THE PUBLIC YET (maybe in passing, yes; but hardly it caught on the public appreciation).

    Good afternoon sir,
    I am concerned myself about the major faults which run through Metro Manila and the potential for a significant movement to occur in the next say 50 years.
    I am aware that the West Valley fault typically moves every 400 or so years, and it last moved I think in 1642.
    We own an apartment on the 33rd floor of Iris Tower, Tivoli Gardens, at 69 Coronado St (along the Pasig River) in Mandaluyong.
    I am aware that a magnitude 7.2 or thereabouts would cause the building to move considerably, and you’d be hanging on to whatever you could reach and praying loudly. Change of underwear would also be likely required.

    How safe would these buildings be, and the highrise buildings in Makati, built within the last 10 or so years? I would expect the building foundations would be firm into the bedrock so ground subsidence and liquifaction should not pose a significant threat I wouldn’t think.
    I should think that because buidings such as these will be designed by reputable engineers, and built in accordance with current standards, so should peform in a similar manner to buildings in say Japan, which faces a similar risk from Earthquakes as the Philippines.

      South Green Heights Village is about 1.25 kms from the fault line. even if a bit far, the general rule is: if the structure above your head is very old or was not designed by a licensed architect and licensed structural or civil engineer, then you are nonetheless VERY MUCH affected as the structural integrity of the house or building may be weak, and roof and walls can collapse. pls. think about it!

    Dear Tulisanes, thanks a lot for your hard work and your concern. I can see that the thread started in 2013. Between then and today May 2015, our LGUs have done nothing to prepare for this event, have they yet? Sad, frustrating, nakakagalit! As if, the public who pay their taxes are left to fend for themselves. Nevertheless, we have a great God and the public have you who are putting in time and effort to help us prepare. Thank you. I notice that there is no mention of LRT Santolan, Cainta, Cogeo, and the rest of Eastern Rizal. I live in Cainta across Sta Lucia Mall. What is the situation over there? Thanks for your reply.

      actually i started the blog in 2010, if i’m not mistaken. but sometime later, the site got corrupted and i had to restart again. lately, i noticed there have been concerns about schools on the fault line. i know the post i made about it did its job of pressuring authorities to take notice. because more than a month prior to be in the news (actually it was just about the end of classes before summer), i monitored through my blog’s dashboard there was an unusually high number of people reading the post for several days, that i thought to myself, “now they are taking notice. i bet soon it will be in the news.” true enough.

Since I’m already here, I want to ask if the place we’re living in is safe and also my work place. Or is it far enough from the fault line to not be greatly affected. Our home is in Katarungan Vilage, Muntinlupa City. We are near Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa. Work place is at Mckinley Hills, Taguig City. Campus Avenue, Science Hub Tower. Lastly, may you please check on St. Luke’s Global too? My husband is working there. Thank you so much! Hoping to hear from you. Thanks again, tulisanes.

      brgy. commonwealth that begins at the back of the batasang pambansa building is about 1.34 km. from the nearest faultline. however, that seemingly far distance means nothing to guarantee safety if houses in the barangay are not structurally strong and mainly were constructed without the expertise and help of a licensed architect or civil or structural engineer. sa madaling salita, puwedeng gumuho ang mga kabahayan dahil sa kakulangan ng kaalaman sa pagpapatayo ng matitibay na istraktura (sorry to say that).

      better living lies after taguig where the faultline apparently disappears and reappears in the sucat thermal plant to continue on to tagaytay. to use the trace faults as basis, and there are no trace faults in your area, it seems you are out of harm’s way. but the real harm can come from collapsing walls and roofs if the place you’re in is not structurally stable should the west valley fault finally move.
